Sansevieria or Mother in Laws tongue is one of the best all rounders. Nearly impossible to find a place in a house where it will do badly. It can withstand under-watering, draughts, very little light and general forgetfulness. Looks good too!

I have 3. Mother-in-law tongue because it can be placed almost anywhere and is not picky about watering--hard to kill Aloe Vera requires very little watering and maintenance but likes a little more light Lucky Bamboo is great because you stick it in just water and doesnt need much light actually it doesnt need any maintenance. It's hard to screw up any of these plants. Great for beginners or someone that wants plants but not the extra work of maintaining them.

I am a plant killer, and I have had good luck with spathophylum (also called closet plant or peace lily). Has large leaves and pretty white lily-like flowers. It is very forgiving about under and over watering. I've also had good luck with ivy - just keep cutting it back to keep it from getting too "leggy" and keep it full looking.

geraniums

They flower all year around if you leave them on windowsills and cheer you up with red, pink colours in dark and gray winter time. They need very little attention, require water just once a week. Even if you forget watering and the soil becomes dry they still survive. You can leave them out in the garden or patio in summer if you like.

They are cheap and last forever.

I like Show-Off plants indoors like Stag Horn Fern and String of Pearls because they are uncommon and are a conversation starter..everybody says...."What in the world is that?"

A ficus tree because they can be shaped and they add oxygen and an energy into the room that brings a sense of the out doors into your home because of their attractive dark foliage.

Cacti + Succulants, as they look kinda unusual and are fairly idiot-proof to look after......... and the forest Cacti (e.g. Christmas Cactus + Easter cactus) have some real good looking flowers on them.

I think one of the best is the Flaming Katy - they don't need too much water, and look really pretty, especially when they flower.
