I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Palpatine and Bush are reflections of each other. After all Emperor Palpatine, from the Star Wars mythology, was a highly intelligent and political savvy creature, who used his own intellectual prowess and resourcefulness to ascend the heights of political power. He was the MANIPULATOR, he wasn’t the MANIPULATED.

George W. Bush is quite the opposite, when it comes to his own intellectual aptitude and political cunning. He is bereft of true intellectual acumen, and has almost no political sensibility. He didn’t arise to his power as a result of his own talent, but instead he owes much of his success to circumstances he was born into. He is the one being MANIPULATED, he certainly isn’t the MANIPULATOR.

Were both leaders are similar is that both Palpatine and Bush strive for militaristic hegemony over their respective dominions at the expense of people’s lives and individual’s dignity. They both look upon a bygone era as something to strive to recapture. They both use social and political turmoil as an excuse to disband normal democratic conventions.

I think the most accurate parallel that can be drawn between Bush and a character in the Star Wars series has to be between Bush and Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader). Anakin was young, immature, petulant, and had too much power that he didn’t know how to handle. Furthermore he was easily manipulated by an elderly figure who played upon his fears and self-interest. If that doesn’t describe Bush to the tee I don’t know what does. If anything Palpatine’s character is more akin to Dick Cheney than that of Bush. Palpatine is Anakin’s enabler, as Mr. Cheney is Bush’s impetus for doing the things he is doing.

The amazing thing is that we project a future in which intergalactic wars are being fought and that peace has not become possible . That a ruling Body of Good verses evil still permeates societies organizations . That gambling prostitution and outlaw planets exist and we have not learned how to get along yet .
That profiteers supply both sides of the battle and attempt to operate outside the laws of both empires .
I happen to like the organians and want them to put an end to war .

Thank you, Che, for your polemic without using the phrase "military industrial complex". You get points for including "hegemony".

Probably nothing since one is fictitious and the other real. Prime example of how liberals are out of touch with reality.

Actually, palpatine had all of the power - so bush is nothing like him.

Cheney is more like palpatine.

Bush is Jar-Jar Binks.
