I'm in college and I stay in a four bedroom apartment on campus with 3 roomates. two of us like the house warm and the other two like it cold. I came to a compromise with one of them and she said she would turn the air on 75 when she got hot. The other girl only cares about herself and turns the air on 65 degrees at night making everyone sick when they wake up. I've asked her to just turn it on 75 and she says that she is to hot even with her window up and it is 60 dgrees at night outside. Me and my other roomate who likes it warm turn it off in the night but when we fall asleep she turns it back on. and we wake up freezing while she says it feels good to her. and when the bill comes we have to split it four ways and it so high because she never turns any lights off and always want it freezing. I think she should pay more on the bill but I can' make her stop turning the ac on 60 or pay more does anyone have any advice. I close my vent but air still gets in because the house is so cold

One thing you could do is get a programmable thermostat and get a locking cover for it. Set it so that the temp. is cooler at night and warmer during the day (or when you are home the most.) Then lock the cover and hide the key. For example in my home we have the heat set at 65 from 10 at night until 2 in the afternoon. From 2 to 10 we have the temp set at 68. (I am home alone during the day & I don't mind wearing hoodies & sweet pants) but I want it warmer when my kids come home from school. (obcviously I am talking about winter weather temps here, but the principal is the same...) Try to find some middle ground....or look for new roommates!

Well you have options. Suggest she get a fan for her room since she is hot natured. Grin and bear it or to be funny freeze and bear it until your lease is up and the two of you that like it warm move into your own place. Well, make that three of you since you came to a compromise with one of the hot natured ones. Dress warmly at night, which sucks. Buy her a fan for her room, if she does not do it. Buy plenty of sinus medication, but make sure you don't get confused for buying products to make meth. Get the other two roommates involved on the idea of the her paying more on utilities since she seems to use more than her share.

I think you should have a 'sit down' meeting with all roommates, and all vote on what the share should be. When conducting this meeting you should state what is expected. If your roommate wants to have it cold then she should agree to pay a higher amount. You should set guidelines, i.e. if she turns it down she understands that she will be charged more for the electricity used.

Remember to be firm, after all you are all college students with a budget.

You can buy a lock box that goes over the thermostat and it is pretty easy to install. Buy your roommate a window fan to bring cold night air into her room. Good Luck and God Bless

i was shocked when i read this as i was in a very similar situation last year in a shared house on campus! there were six of us in our house and three people liked the house really hot and three (including myself) liked it cooler. it led to lots of disagreements in our house!

we had a 'house' meeting and decided that we needed to reach an argreed temperature for the house and stick to it and that people would stop changing the temperature just to suit themselves. however, this didn't work so in the end we had a house meeting with one of the wardens and we actually did stick to an agreed temperature then.

trust me, i know how annoying this is! hope this helps a little and good luck!

the way i see it there are 2 ways resolving this problem first a very simple way is just brake the switch so the cant turn it on done, second dont pay your part of the bill until they cut the electricity and done too. and if she keeps paying herself for the AC, well good for you.
