haaa it is such a big question, Of course the unrest and civil dis-obdience and unification of indian rulers.
Mostly it was a civil movement with the leadership of so many section of leaders, Bapu is one but we must not forget Subhash chandra Bose, and other extremist leaders.
It is sad how the same kind of unrest is prevailing in other parts of World.
Some of them are logical but most of them are illolical misguided uprising.

Although the British did bring many good reforms into India [ the Railways, the English education system, the Post & Telegraphs, the IAS system for administration, etc] , ultimately their greed in sucking wealth out of India through trade, and their selfishness as a whole became very apparent to lots and lots of Indians.
They also had different set of rules for themselves (while living in India) from the ones they applied to the locals.
All this became more and more objectionable to lots and lots of Indians.
It then was the genius of people like Mahatma Gandhi to use the principle of 'Satyagraha' or Non-violence in opposing the British.
Thus, HUGE masses of India became motivated for Swarajya, and the few British fellows sitting in India could no longer control the surging millions!
[Remember, the population of India, even in the 1940s, was about 40 times that of the whole of UK.] Once the 'Quit India' movement got out of control (from the British view point), it became impossible for the English soldiers to suppress or control the revolting Indians.
The rest is History!!!

I'm not expert but but in my opinion the British colonized large portions of the globe during a time when there was a mentality that they guy with the bigger stick could just come in and take over. That was just the way it was and as far as most people were concerned that was the natural order of things. As society developed more and more people began to think that it just isn't right for one nation to just go in a conquer another one. The more that sort of idea took hold the more pressure that was put on the British to relinquish their hold on all of the place they had conquered. Giving India back is just one of many examples of the British relinquishing its power on its conquests.

The Indians then were not divided as they are now. They felt that all of them are FIRST INDIANS AND ANYTHING ELSE CAME SECOND.In the struggle for freedom, they ,under the leadership of people like Mahatma Gandhi,Jawaharlal Nehru,Sardar Vallabhai Patel etc etc to name a few, felt their blood boiling and so firmly stood against the So called Mighty British Brutal Force.Patriotism was the binding factor. They felt their lives unworthy of living without Freedom. There was the Greatest Force of Mahatma Gandhi.
So, the British were finally convinced that their period is over and were compelled to leave India,
It is FOR US ,ESPECIALLY YOUTH TO KNOW ,READ ABOUT THE FREEDOM STRUGGLE,THE SACRIFICES THE INDIANS MADE,THE SUFFERINGS THEY FACED ,AND KEEP UP THE SPIRIT AND SEE THAT INDIA IS EVEN NOW "ONE''.
Even the mighty serpent dies when small ants are united and fight.Remember the power of unity.

Because like every powerful person has his downfall someday, the British too had reached their downward journey to power. Besides, their strength could not match up with the zeal and fervor of our Indian freedom fighters. British ruled for many years because they had the power of money but India won the ultimate fight because we had the brains lead by People like Gandhi, Nehru and others.
