Well having a boss that is nearly illiterate might be part of the problem.

What policy do you have and what punishment for violation?

I suspect the jobs probably suck and you don't pay anything more than minimum wage, being fired would be a blessing and so why on earth would they bother to call and help you out!!!!!

Most companies have a requirement to call in if you're gonna be late or can't come in. A lot of employees simply don't care or they know that if they do call in they are just going to be told to get their butts to work. Ever notice that those with legitimate reasons DO call in? The ones that don't are just hoping to come up with an acceptable excuse(not reason) as to why they didn't call. Or they figure they will just get a warning (which usually happens).

Most people don't call in for one of two reasons:

1) They're not able to because they're stranded on the side of the road somewhere, lying unconscious in their house, or something along those lines.

2) They're playing hooky and rather than try and fake a good excuse they'll wait to see if they're confronted later for not showing up. I guess they figure at least it gives them more time to think of an excuse.

They're irresponsible. Don't realize or don't care that their job is definitely on the line.

Won't last long in the job. That's cool. Will open the job up for someone else.

Because they could probably careless about the job. Especially if they are working a crappy job that doesn't give you enough hours, or bullshi$ pay, or the job just plain suck.

They don't have good work ethics. This usually comes with lower paying jobs.

They mostly don't care, especially if it's an entry level position. They can get another one tomorrow.
