Decrypting programming that you are not authorized to receive is very illegal and you can be sued for big bucks if found out. Typically, the satellite companies go after the individuals and companies selling the illegal equipment. Once they're busted, they seize their customer and credit card records to find out who's been using the equipment. Then they send out the settlement letters where you can pay them off for thousands of dollars or you can go to court where you'll have to pay a lawyer thousands more on top of whatever they're awarded when you lose.
You say you don't know a lot about it. If you were to do this, you would have to know a lot about it as the satellite companies send down ECMs that disable your equipment every day. Every day you would have to reconfigure your box to steal programming. Even getting your box to work like that in the first place you risk burning it up and your warranty is void and you're stuck with a worthless pile of junk. Does it sound like it's worth it to you now? Don't do it.

Not really, It's kinda like "dish" or satellite TV. There are over 400 channels available for the high price you pay and you can only listen to one at a time. Surveys show that most people listen to or watch 3 to 4 different stations at all times. The favorites get 97% of the use and the other 396 channels go unused.

RE:
Are satellite descramblers worth the money?
I'm thinking about trading a new iPod for a satellite descrambler and don't know a lot about it. Will I be able to get all the programming FREE? Is this illegal?

No. Because after a few short months the satellite company can determine that you have a descrambler and send a signal thru the satellite that will disable your access card. I had one for a few months but then the picture would cut in and out. The satellite company had to send me a new card because my satellite stopped working and I could not receive any shows.

There are legitimate receivers that can receive international channels. It is legal to do that... check out "Free To Air Dish" in any search engine.
This is for the free stuff. Not for descrambling.
