It will depend on what your career goal is (assuming you graduated from either High School or college), where you work, and your personallity.

I tended bar in a place like a Ruby Tuesday's that was a local place (not a chain) in a beach resort town with lots of government workers at near military bases.

I used the down time to talk with business travelers about their jobs, where they lived, etc. in order to see how to break into their field.

After about a year, I was able to get an interview and got hired.

Tending bar (at least where I was) was a great job and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Yes! When one works in a pub or bar one meets people of every color, job or socioeconomic status. You get to see that people are just people regardless of the money they have or where they are from.

When you take that to any future job you are miles ahead of anybody. Plus you meet many people in many fields who can expand you thinking a bit and are often willing to point you in the right direction. Why?

As it was explained to me and what I have seen through the years is the most valuable commodity in any field is human interaction. There are tons of people who know their job well through experience or education but put them in a crowd and they fail. Employers have tons of people who can do the technical work but finding someone who knows less and can just talk is rare.

Through the years of the military, government and now private private companies wearing an awesome suit when I sit across a table from people or in front of 100..... I always inside think of the difficult customers at the bar.

what kind of pub work?? like any restaraunt career, jobs such as bartending and waitressing are all about what u make of it. It depends on where u work, and what kind of personality u have. You can make a ton of money in the business or you can be one of those broke waitors who is always depending on their tips. Look around at the local pubs, whatever ones are primarily busy all the time would be a good choice. Also, u have to be willing to work nights and weekends.

Good luck!

I have been a bartender and a waitress like ppl have said tips are usually good
I have never done drugs so it was easy for me to stay away from that aspect
but besides taking alot of energy you need a good memeory and to be able to move very fast ppl want there drinks and are often not very patient
but if you are energetic and a fast learner I would do it not forever but its an okay job for a year or two

Only if u are a people person. Working in a pub takes alot of energy and u need to enjoy your work or people can tell u r only there because u have to be not cause u want to be. More energy more friendly more money!!!!

It all depends. Do you really want to stay up til 4am sober? Do you really want to possibly clean up puke or deal with mean drunks who might not tip well? If smoking is permitted in your state, will it be worth risking your health? Usually it's hard to become a serious bartender because it's just like serving tables....high overturn rate. Bartenders are a dime a dozen...it is good money though if you can put up with other people's crap...I think the biggest drawback is that most true and genuine people aren't going to want to date a bartender because of their lifestyle.

Good for a while, I mean I've worked in a bar for 10 years, good money but not all fun and games. Eventually, it becomes a drag, dealing with drunks and losers...you need nerves of steal....but hey, a job's a job!

I had bar jobs in my younger years, and they were some of the best years of my life. We always had lots of fun, and I met some wonderful people. You can even work abroad in bars. However you need to develop your skills and go in to bar management if you want it as a proper career choice.

I worked happy hour in a nice bar years ago,and it was a great job. People are there to have a good time, and want to be there, so it's a happy kind of job.
