If you say, "Wars affect everybody," you are saying that everyone is affected by wars; in some way, there is an affect, a result, caused by war, that touches everyone.
If you say, "Wars effect everybody," you are saying that everyone is brought into being by wars--which is not true.

Affect is a verb, effect is a noun.
You could probably remember it as A for Affect and A for Action (hence a verb)
