I took a test for the post office 2 weeks ago, at that time they said the results will be posted at the chosen offices, in 2 weeks time. the Lady at the front desk conferred with her supervisor then came back and asked me my age, (which confused me) and then said to contact human resources. What would my age have to do with the test results or if I had passed?

While many jobs have a minimum age of 16, (15 for most food service) USPS requires a minimum age of 18, or 16 with a high school diploma, if you are under the age of 18 you are not eligible for employment. On the other hand, if you are over 18 and they are asking you your age this is a discrimintaory question, and you could persue legal action against them.

It's not illegal to ask someone's age when contemplating hiring them. There is such a thing as a minimum age requirement.
It varies depending on many things including city, state and/or federal laws. Whether or not the place serves alcohol, etc., etc.

Maybe you don't look as old as their minimum age and that's why she asked. Only she truly knows why she asked.

Why? Because they want to get sued, that's why. Asking the age of an applicant is illegal because it would allow the company to discriminate against older workers.

That's an illegal question to ask. Age can only be discussed after a job offer is made. Even asking to see your driver's license can be taken as probing for your age.

Is there an age limit for the job you are applying for? If not, I do find this slightly dogdy.
