I have no idea why. No matter what grade or school you go to you will aways have to learn something pointless.

Your education up till you graduate highschool is generalized. You are taught a moderate amount of information from a wide variety of topics. Most of this stuff you'll forget within a year. The point is not to make you memorize all this information. School at this age is meant to teach you HOW to think. It's meant to teach you problem solving techniques, and to mold your mind to be a better reciprical of information. You're not suppose to remember where Djabouti is specifically, but the concept is to figure out HOW to find it if you needed too. College also has some classes that follow this same concept (called General Ed) but you'll also take specific classes that directly affect the career you want. THIS is the information you are meant to retain, and will, because (as long as you stick with that career choice) you will be constantly using it. If you're an Egnlish major and become a magazine publisher, for example, you probably won't use math much and will forget many basic formulas that an engineer may retain. But the primary education system (K-12) DOES have a goal... even though many would argue that the system is flawed in many other ways.

Learning places in the world is important because this is knowledge about things outside of school. It is meant to get you thinking that your little corner of the world is just that. There are other cultures, environments, traditions, family structures, clothing styles, you name it. You should be willing to look outside your box. Check out Djibouti using one of the search engines or even Wikipedia. You will be amazed by what you find.
Djibouti has only been a country since June 27, 1977. However, its history goes back thousands of years. Djiboutians traded hides and skins for the perfumes and spices of ancient Egypt, India, and China.
Through close contacts with the Arabian peninsula for more than 1,000 years, the Somali and Afar tribes in this region became among the first on the African continent to accept Islam. Djibouti is a Muslim country which regularly takes part in Islamic as well as Arab meetings. It lis ocated in Africa and one of the bordering countries is Somalia which is often in the news lately. They don't have much rainfall and so they have to import most agricultural products,
I hope I have stirred your imagination. Good luck.

You need to know at least the name & location of each of the nations of the world --Djibouti used to be Somaliland, because that's where the Somalis live--and something about it. That's part of being an educated person. Some first graders may think it pointless to be able to read, "See the little green car"--where would you actually use that in real life?--but by now I'm sure you are aware of the value of reading. And, sooner or later, you'll be aware of the value of geography.

I've been teaching grades 7-12 for 20 years, and I can honestly say, "I have NO idea!" I quit teaching subject complements, gerunds, infinitives, and the like a LONG time ago. I mean, let's face it, the only time I had to know that crap was for ONE class I took in college - and that was a class specifically for people who were going to be English teachers!!!!
Seriously, have you ever heard of a CEO bringing in someone and saying, "Good God, Simpson. This report is brilliant! It's going to make MILLIONS for our company. . . now could you underline six adjectives and circle at least ten adverbs for me?" Get REAL and teach something that's relevant to a person's life.

Because it's required by law that they teach certain curriculums. Maybe they want to teach you other things, but they're required to teach other things. And the capital of Djabouti is Djabouti. That's so weird! ^-^

Because knowledge is priceless. You may not realise it now, but as you grow older, you'll see all the advantages.
And it's Djibouti.
