Hello all
I have a 89 Honda CRX DX, - recently had the timing done by a mechanic. But after the fact i noticed that the acceleration, in the 0~3000rpm range is now very poor. (when reved over 3k rpm its fine) It is very sluggish from a stop, so much so that I am avoiding entering the freeways since its so slow to get up to speed. Also the battery on my car was dead (now replaced) and now suspecting that the poor acceleration may be a bad alternator? Can a failing alternator cause this? or is it the cause of a bad mechanic? or something else...

sounds like your timming is off... alternator won't affect the acceleration as you mentioned

It sounds like the timing is too advanced. When the timing is too advanced you will have much high end but sacrifice low end for it. Check the timing at the underdrive pulley and the cam sprocket with a timing light. Then adjust accordingly from the distributor cap. Reference the timing specs under the hood or in the service manual.

It could also be that the timing belt tensioner was put on too tight.

If your sure that this started after you received your back from the mechanic then it is very possible that the timing belt is off one tooth. A seasoned tech / mechanic can miss by one tooth, after all we are all human. However a good tech will find the problem and if needed admit he/she made a mistake. Good luck and don't be one of those customers who blames the tech before hand, get it checked out.
