A thing is that which can be described, and which something may act upon in some way (i.e., can be the indirect object in a sentence). A chair is a thing because it has attributes that can be described, and because I can SIT on a CHAIR (sit is the verb, chair is the indirect object). A word is a thing, even though it isn't a physical thing, because it has attributes that can be described (composed of sounds when spoken and letters when written, has a part of speech, etc.), and because I can SAY a WORD (say is the verb, word is the indirect object).

It helps me understand, to contrast with its opposite, no-thing. If it exists it is a thing. Even things that are impossible, can exist as a thought, because thoughts are things.
Propose any idea, is it a thing or no-thing? So is an idea, a thing?

It is a "thing" if it is not a"no-thing"(nothing). Actually, it is impossible for it not to be a "thing" because a"no-thing" does not exist.
