St. Patrick rid Ireland of snakes :-)....born in Scotland, but became patron saint of Ireland. He died on March 17th, 493, hence Saint Patrick's Day. In Ireland it's a national holiday....here we use it as an excuse to be extremely bigoted about what we think Irish people are known for and get sodding drunk on green beer. :-D

It is the Irish national holiday. March 17th is the day that St-Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, died. St-Patrick is said to have used the shamrock to explain the holy trinity and convert people to christianity. The day is celebrated by Irish people and more and more by non-Irish people hence the phrase, "Everyone wants to be Irish on St. Patrick's Day."
