I live in a city that has horrible public schools, but luckily we also have school choice. Because of this, I am able to send my kids to school in another district, as long as I am willing to provide their transportation, and it does not cost any more than if they stayed in district. I personally LOVE it!!

The worst schools in our city are closing 1 by 1 because of low attendance, and the ones that are left are getting the idea that they need to get their acts together or follow suit. Some people are complaining that they no longer have a school in their neighborhood. My thinking is, who cares where the school is if your kids aren't learning anything?

I also have a theory that we are just in a stage where we are making an example of the bad schools, and eventually, we will swing back in the other direction. I believe that as the good schools in our district start to get overcrowded, we will have to open more schools again, but this time they will be of a much higher quality.

Any economist will warn that a monopolistic market is a market gone wrong. In a monopolistic market there is only one supplier. Since there is only one supplier, it can produce as inferior of a product as it wishes; people simply have no choice but to accept the product. The US government serves children with free, but inferior public education. The inferiority arises from the government’s monopoly over public education. The only way to change a monopolistic market is through creating competition in that market. Competition is the crucial element which makes our capitalistic society successful. If our economy thrives because of competition, why can’t our educational system also thrive on this principal of capitalism? It is widely accepted that young people who graduate high school are much more likely to succeed in the workforce. However, according to the U.S. Department of Education, “The U.S. has fallen to ninth in the developed world in high school graduation rates among young adults” (OECD). Critics of our public school system blame inadequate funding as the main cause of failure, but public school expenditures have increased, and so have dropout rates (Kearnes in Murphy 138). Although proper funding for a school is important, there is something missing in the American public school system. The answer to reforming the educational system and helping our children succeed is more competition between schools. Competition can be created through charter schools and educational voucher programs.

.You are very fortunate because I live in a school district that gives you a run around as far as school choice. When you complain to the state they have a way of listening to one-sided stories or covering up for each other, like for example ,a superintendent removed my child from the only performing school in the district after being there 5days;said she had to go to the failing school near our home...? They tell you, you have no options....? But to answer your question, school choice is not equal opportunity, I guess many parents who "KISS UP" and don't question the superintendent and board members at the meetings and are satisfied with being kept in the dark are the ones who will get first choice .Even in education where our children are supposed to be getting educated under the hands of qualified staff, there are many districts being ran by some twisted and greedy individuals[You do Know that schools in failing districts get"X" amount of dollars in TITLE 1 funds-perhaps that is the reason many children can not move to a better school.School is not what it use to be. In many districts it's all about money flowing into the districts that seems not to be monitored. But then again ,the children are always the ones to suffer.Even when school choice is suppose to be an option that parents can take advantage of ,in some districts, corruption dictates otherwise. I believe they keep the kids "DUMB" on paper so they can continue to collect more of taxpayers money. The children are not uppermost on their minds. Kids get stressed just as we do. When bad districts are taken over by staff that really cares, it will be reflexed in the grades and there will be no need for "SCHOOL CHOICE"! I wish you well.

Let me start by saying I am glad you are concerned with your child's education. Not every parent is. That being said, I feel that a lot of people tend to put the good of one before the good of many. My biggest concern is the children whose parents can't physically or financially afford to transport their children to other schools. By allowing those who can afford to transport their children to choose a new school and leaving the rest behind, the school is creating more and more distance between the have and have-nots. All children should be able to receive a quality education. By moving your children, you are not forcing them to change the way they do things. You are just running away from the problems that other parents are stilled forced to face every day. Parents should attend school board meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and voice their concerns for all students, not just their own. Schools need parent involvement and volunteers. Make a difference in your school. In your neighborhood. Another reason this should be a concern for you, is property value. Homes in areas that have good school districts are valued higher and sell faster than homes in poor districts. This is one of the most important aspects new parents look at when purchasing a home. You would have a different perspective if you were one of the unlucky parents whose children were getting left behind. Walk a day in their shoes. You'll find it might not be as comfortable as you would imagine.
