What does it smell like? Sometimes the belt slips off the beater bar and when the bar turns it starts to burn the rubber.

My vacuum cleaner smells because my DH used it to clean up some cat litter, used cat litter. So now when you use it it smells like nasty ammonia.

Make sure all the belts are in good condition. The drive-belt could be slipping causing the "rubber" smell.

it needs to be cleaned.

the inside has accumulated dust and after awhile it will smell.

look in your nozel, under the vacuum where the inside of the rotating wheel is, that is probably clogged, it could be clogged just inside the vacuum where the extenions are connected.

you can also pour a large pile of baking soda and vacuum it up, that can help for awhile.

when mine smells, either my bag is full or the belt is broke and if it's real bad I'd say the belt. If that doesn't work check around, make sure she didn't hide a dead body. LOL

The burnt smell is from the belt actually burning.
You need to repair it or get a new one.

Good luck.

If it's a vacuum with a bag, the bag needs to be changed.
