I'm a fan of foreign movies, but I find that many of the European movies are boring and somewhat plotless. While it could be that I have just been seeing the wrong movies, or that Hollywood has spoiled my taste, I would deny any claims of ethnocentricity as I have found many Japanese movies in the very least, watchable. What I want to know is, if Europeans watch eurofilms? If not, why no improvement in quality? I realize that much of the cinema is subsidized, could that have an effect on quality? Or maybe I'm just missing something?

Europe, bollywood, japan and many other countries have a thriving film industry. Just look at the number that win Oscars.

The only reason that the US dominates the film world is because they have the numbers and the money on their side. American movies seem to be dominated by violence and similar genre.

Many European films require a little thought and sophistication and are entirely enjoyable. So much so that there are far more DVD libraries loaded with European films than US.

Europe does not want quick fix shots of adrenaline. They enjoy the US films when they come out but few watch them more than once or twice.

You can keep your American Pies and Rocky 1 through 16, French cinema is the best in the world. Four hours of an unshaven man and a heavily lip-sticked woman stuck in an attic with a stuffed parrot, saying nothing as they smoke endless Gitanes and the rain runs in torrents down the window. Ah, Cinema Noir! Cinema Verite!

well foreign movies tend to rely on character development instead of action sequences, special effect, and cgi. b/c their industries are smaller and cant afford it. so that might be why its not really eyecatching.
