the game of baseball has been around a lot longer than fantasy ball.

Fantasy baseball is about statistics, and there is a lot more to baseball than statistics. Fantasy definitely encourages more people to follow the game, and, hopefully, it creates more fans, but the sport wasn't created for statistics.

Johan Santana isn't thinking about his stats when he's pitching to Jim Thome, and Gary Mathews isn't considering his VORP when he sees a ball hit deep to CF. It was the enthusiasm of Willie Mays and the grace of Roberto Clemente that got me watching baseball, and every year, there are new players in the game who remind me why this game is great!

Fantasy is fun, but it just adds interest to an already great game. And speaking of Fantasy, I'll be rooting for the Pirates again this year. I'm thinking, maybe 90 wins? OK, I guess I am a dreamer...

I don't play fantasy baseball, but I watch baseball every day of the season. I have Royals season tickets, so I generally see 70 some odd games each year in person.

Of course. It IS the thinking person's game after all. And baseball got along just fine for more than a century without fantasy baseball.

If that's all that keeps you interested, then I personally couldn't refer to you as a fan of the game. That's because you're not, you're not paying attention for anything more than the what "your" players are doing. You're not watching for the game itself, the the skill level necessary, for the strategies, etc. You'll only interested because fantasy baseball is a form of gambling.

Then again, no one would watch football if it weren't for gambling.

Hmmm, baseball was around long before fantasy baseball was ever thought up... so I would say that people would watch baseball if it weren't for fantasy sports.

I've watched baseball all my life. And, it has nothing to do with fantasy baseball. I didn't even know there was fantasy baseball till '05.

I was a fan of baseball even before fantasy baseball was invented.

Without a doubt. I think people are more apt to watch football for fantasy purposes than baseball.

I'd guess in the last 5 years I've missed perhaps a grand total of 10-20 Red Sox games. I love the Sox, and try my best to watch every single game on TV.
