Yes to both.
As far as the epidural... it hurt to have it done and the area in my back was highly sensitive to cold for about a year. If it was cold, the area ached. But I also had a spinal block & morphine because I had an emergency c-section so I don't know what caused which side effects.
As for the c-section, recovery was okay except I had a painful tingle in the right section of my crotch. That really hurt even to touch it. The c-section was 7 years ago & I'm okay. Except I've gained a little weight and there is an almost unnatural pouch above my scar and only in that area.

I had both, with no complications. I did not want an epidural since I was afraid they would miss. However, I was in so much pain I gave in (i was having complications which made it painful). I realized that the anethesiologist had done epidurals numerous times so I shouldn't worry. The c-section was painful after all the numbing was gone but they offer pain pills. I was up walking around within 6 hours. The scar also is hardly noticable and is below the panty line so I can still wear a bikini (I gotta get back in shape first!!!!!)

My son was induced. He decided he didn't want to come out of his nice warm comfy place, but he was getting to big for a natural delivery - even though I stuck it out for a 2 days hoping he would. However, within the first day, I requested an epidural for the pain - it was terrible. The epridural didn't hurt when they put it in - I guess the pain from the contractions was much worse... I barely even felt it. Just a slight prick - maybe my doc was really good!
After 2.5 days of labor, my son starting losing oxygen and his heart rate was slowing down considerably... so in 10 minutes flat, I was wisked into the operating room for the c-section to save my son's life.
During the middle of the c-section, my epridural wore off, and I could feel alot of pressure and pain - they knocked me out immediately... although I would have LOVED to been awake for his birth. The meds they used to knock me out fully made me really groggy for the special after birth hours (I was saything something about butterflies and coffee... my brother said) :) and later made me constipated.
Afterwards though, I was in alot of pain - I was instructed not to drive for 3 months since the muscles and stitches needed to heal. (they didn't give me any pain killers... to this day, I don't know why - the idiots!). I had an area around the scar that was numb for several months - but those nerves healed and I now have feeling there. However, I still have a silver dollar sized area on my right hip that has no sensation.
I was a single mom, so it was great having my family around to help with caring for my son while I was bed-riden. My son slept with me at night so I could nurse him without getting up. (THAT sure helped with the lack of sleep most parents complain about!). Showering was the biggest contribution to any sort of pain while healing. I couldn't lift my hands above my head or make any quick movements. The stomach muscles have ALOT to do with everyday movements - even more than you'd think!
I still have a good sized scar, but it's unnoticable under my underware or swimming suit. However, I would have loved it if they would have just gave me a tummy tuck while they were at it! The little pooch above the scar will never go away no matter how much I work out or diet. But it's hideable under clothes.
All in all... it was worth it. If the doctor says you need a c-section, don't worry about it. It's not the ideal, but just as long as your baby is safe, it's WELL worth it!
Isn't it amazing what a mom will do for their child?
And.. congradulations on the new baby!

Hi i had an epidural but then my babies heart rate dropped (not caused by the epidural) so i had to have an emergency c-section, being honest the c-section wasn't nice and was very sore for weeks after, i also had a infection in the site so that didn't help healing, but you ignore the pain and just thank god your babies fine

I had a c-section and a spinal block for the delivery of my twins. I cant do sit up because it hurts where the injection site was. But 2 days after I had the spinal block they put me back in surgery because i was leaking spinal fluid from the injection site. I think that has a lot to do with my pain in my lower back. As for my scar its almost gone. My doctor used stitches so I barely have a scar.
