They are equaly hard on your nail beds, no matter what anyone says. But in my opinion, Gels are faster, easier to apply and look nicer.
I always get Gels.

My own nails had always been long and healthy. But I wanted to try something new and I made the mistake of getting the acrylic nails for my birthday and I've been sorry ever since. It's been almost 3 months and I still have those ugly lines in my real nails. And they're so soft and paper thin that as soon as they start to grow..... they break right back off. I'm kicking myself everyday for that stupid decision. Never tried the gel but after dealing with the acrylic, I have to say that I recommend sticking with your own nails.

Acrylic nails are a little stronger, but gel nails look more natural. It's all a matter of personal taste.

Acrylics can be removed with acetone, but gels have to be filed off. Gels self level, so there is less filing for the nail tech and are shiny without topcoat. Both take the same amount of time to apply, but gels take longer to remove.
