The toyota prius with about 55 est. mpg. or a Honda Insight 55 est. mpg. But both are quite hideous so i would suggest a new civic hybrid 50 est mpg.
The VW diesels are also good with about 40 combined est mpg.

Hybrids in general or deisel cars. But for regular gas cars go with the Honda civic or Chevy Aveo. Toyota like the Corolla get great mileage as well got to http://www.fueleconomy.gov/
