Remember, link popularity is hugely important, but the quality of those links is equally important. There are two parts to link quality. First, sites that are pointing to your website ideally must have related content. Search engines will give links from sites with related content more value. The second component to link quality is the actual words the other webmaster uses in your link. The intent is to ensure the links pointing back to your website include your most relevant keywords in the link title. Hi,
They are an important part of the SEO process, but there are many more things that can be done to improve your SEO.

Go to Google with your keywords, enter them one by one and you will bring up a number of Web pages that are relevant to your Web site. Make a list of these sites and then write an e-mail requesting a link exchange. Many will be direct competitors and will not respond, but some may agree to link in order to increase their own rankings.

Avoid link farm scams - these are large groups of Web pages created just to try and fool the search engines - the SEs are smarter than that.

Web rings are a free service that organizes related Web sites around a common theme - like, Black Labs, etc.

You may want to click on (www.link-check.net). It offers a software program as a download that will automate the process of link checking. You may find this free e-book helpful: http://value-exchange.sitesell.com/waltera1.html. It explains why back links are so valuable and how it can be done automatically.

Add your URL to Craigs List - (craiglist.com). This is a free classified listing.

Get this book: Search Engine Optimization - An Hour A Day by Jennifer Grappone and Gradiva Couzin. It will tell you what to avoid and what works.

The search engines are taking into account the number of the links to
your site and depending that number they will decide how important is your
website. The more links to your website, the better ranking. It is very imporant for
your site to have good and many backlinks. What is a good backlink ? Good backlinks
are those links to your site from pages with high PageRank.A good and simple way to
gather backlinks to you website can be achieved by submiting your site to free web
directories or payed web directories. Also a lot of good directories are accepting
reciprocal URL linking; this means that they will put your link on their page if
you will put a link to them on yours.Take into account that some incoming links are better than others. The best links
are those that come from the sites with the same theme (called relevant sites),
come from high PageRank websites, come from a page that has few outbound links,
come from pages wich are relative often updated.

VERY IMPORTANT - it tells the search engines how popular your site is and gives them an idea of how relevant your pages are.

However, backlinks from just about any website is no longer the norm. Search engines now look at who are linking to you and how related those sites to you are. They put more importance if those backlinks are industry related.

Google in particular has also gotten better in detecting PAID backlinks and discounts the importance of those -- so be very careful with those. Read Matt Cutt of Google's post in his blog http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/tell-me-about-your-backlinks/

Paid backlinks and low-content reciprocal linking will not do your site any good, and may even be detrimental to your ranking (particularly if you are buying links from sites that Google does not like)
