Well, if you are looking for good undergraduate programs to lead you towards medical school, ANY school in the UC system is a good bet. CSU schools do not send as many grads to medical school. As far as private schools go, USC and (uggh) Stanfurd aren't so bad, either.
Technically, you can get into medical school from any accredited 4-year college provided you complete the pre-reqs and ace the MCAT. But medical schools don't accept students equally from all schools. You should look at MATRICULATION RATES to figure out which schools do the best job of sending their graduates to medical school. Elite universities have the highest matriculation rates.
If you are talking about actual medical schools, California has some of the best in the country. All California medical schools are highly selective and competitive.
