I think it's an interesting question, but ultimately unanswerable.

You seem to assume that the "UK" is a stable concept upon which history is built, but I think it's the other way around.

History, as the sum total of human interaction over a defined period, has shaped what we now understand as "the UK". I mean, it is not possible to talk about "the United Kingdom" in isolation - and then apply history to it!

Are we talking about the geographical region? Or the socio-political concept of "the UK" as a nation state, a sovreign entity? Or perhaps the people living here - is this a social history?

The vague concept of "British history" is inevitably intertwined with the histories of peoples all over the world. Any discussion of the early years of the monarchy is strongly linked to the dominant families on a European scale. We also "fit in" to a colonial context and a world political arena.

I find the concept of "national history" very dull, precisely because it tries to limit itself to such a narrow field.

UK has a history all right - it's mainly about war. In England, there are 500 battlefields. What were we doing to each other? One outcome was Magna Carta, which for the first time ever, laid down a code of rules and rights for the people. No, nothing like the US Bill of Rights or the Constitution, but a start anyway.

We had a series of running battles with each other for many centuries. Mainly these were to do with ownership/possession of the 'Crown of England'.

We then had a long series of civil wars, the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil War being the most well known.

Somewhere in between all these battles, we managed to bash the French into submission, create 13 colonies in America, lose them in yet another war. Defeat the entire armies of Europe in the Napoleonic wars.

We then sat around for about 100 years building up an Empire and starting the first Industrial Revolution. We then got involved in two major European Wars [how foolish of us] both of which screwed up our wealth. By 1945 UK was exhausted.

But, dear readers, this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end, but it may just be the end of the beginning.

The UK certainly has a long history, and I, as an Englishman, love it. However many other nations also have amazing history. France, Spain, Germany, Italy, the Middle East, China, Greece and Egypt all have incredible history.

However, if you judge best by how powerful they have been throughout history, then China would win hands down.

Yet, British influence on the world has been profound. We built the greatest empire the world has seen, were the leaders were most of the Industrial Revolution, persistently stopped France becoming dominant, and laid the foundations for many of today's countries (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, USA...). In terms of influence, there are only a few countries that have matched us, and none that have surpassed us (yet).

I'd say as an American the UK history has without a doubt the most profound historical influence. Most western democracies and nations in Africa and Asia can trace their origins and histories from Great Britain. Especially important are documents like the Magna Carta and the Common law.
Many of Englands historical figures read like characters out of novels: Henry VIII, Richard III, Elizabeth I, Thomas More, Winston Churchill, Lord Nelson to name a few. That is not to say all of the characters were the best of men or women but at least it makes a good read.

Is that a question? I only see random sentence fragments.

But I think I understand your question.

I don't think you can rate a country's history. What would the criteria be for a country's history to be the "best?" Did their civilization last the longest? Or was it the goriest? Or did it conquer the most countries?

There's no answer to that.

I CAN however tell you what country's history is MY favorite. That is Spain's.

Sorry, Chena...I do not agree.
Though the UK has a long history, I would scarcely call it the best history.
To my mind, among the best histories would be the Egyptian, Italian (home of the beginning of the Renaissance) and the Middle Eastern histories.

I think Britain has a great history, however it's not the best.

A lot ot the ancient civilisations like the Romans, Greeks, Eyptians and Incas have a much more revolutionary history.

Many of the structures like the Pyramids and Colluseums have shown vast intellect and archetectural knoweledge and their histories are steeped in mystery and progression.

The also had great battles and took over countries in the name of advancement.

I absolutely love history and wish to study and teach it in universities when I've finished my Ph.D. In particular, I'm passionate about Scottish history (which is what I'm studying and wish to specialise in), so that to me is the best history. It's really subjective - up to the individual. We all have different likes and dislikes - we would be very boring if we were all the same! Also, it's fascinating listening to someone who is passionate about their subject, like the history of another country. My best mate went to a different university to me and studied English history - we often have debates! lol

I don't think you can say that because at school etc you only learn about your own history. Like me you will know little of the history of other fine countries such as Sweden, Norway, China, Korea and the list goes on.....
