The US, under Teddy Roosevelt, helped rebels win their independence from Columbia, thus creating Panama. In exchange, the US built and had control over the Panama Canal.

Why wouldn't they? We decide to build a canal through their country, and to make it easier for us, we paid some landowners in the area to start a movement to secede from Colombia, and immediately sent troops to support them. Oddly enough, less than a month after the gained independence from Colombia, they signed a treaty giving the US the rights to build and run the canal.

I agree with both BethS and DavidW. However I must point out to DavidW that "they" meaning the Panamanians did NOT sign the original canal treaty (Hay-Buneau Varilla). It was signed by the French and US, when the Panamanian "negotiating" committee arrived to the US they were confronted with the terrible news that the treaty had already been signed (without them).
