I have a beta fish, and i am almost positive he has dropsy, i know that Kanacyn is known to help but the closest place that i can think of that would have it, is around 100miles away, none of the vets here have it, and say just flush him, he is just a fish, but i dont want to do that if he can get better, he is my desk mate at work and helps me with my day, does anyone know of something that can be gotten at petco or petsmart that can help with this problem?

What you need is Furanace and as far as I know neither Petco nor Petsmart sells it. Ask a local vet to prescribe some nifurpirinol if you can't find the Furanace. You need to treat with 250mg per 10 gallons for 10 days so from that figure out the dosage and number of pills for your tank. You can't get this at a pharmacy as it's no longer used for humans, but a local Vet may stock it.

This specific medication has a good track record for treating internal infections in fish because it can be absorbed through the fishes gills. Some other can as well, but few.

If you can't find it hopefully you can find a Vet willing to work with you on getting it or another recommended antibiotic.

Be aware though that dropsy is tough to treat and the chances he will recover ar fairly slim.

I treated a goldfish that had dropsy with maracyn 1 and 2, both of which can be bought at either petsmart or petco. It did come back though and worse then before and the fish had to be put down. Please don't flush a fish to kill it whether it can get better or not, it is very cruel, if you must euthanize find a better way.

Edit: I have always been told not to use normal aquarium salt with a fish that has dropsy. That type of salt retains the liquid in the fish and you want to draw it out so you should use epsom salt instead.

some ailments are certainly zoonotic (meaning different animals such as us ought to seize them from the fish), even if dropsy isn't a ailment. it should be a symptom of renal failure, that ought to have a form of particular causes from water tremendous issues, via detrimental weight relief plan, to interior bacteria/parasitic an infection. once the fish starts off pineconing, the analysis isn't perfect, even if you may not grab it. A 1gal tank is a few distance, some distance too small for any fish, i'm afraid. Even bettas need to be in 10gal. with assistance from no means, ever carry out a one hundred% water change, and taking her out of the tank to finish that is thoroughly unnecessary. All fish can must have a clear out and tropical fish reminiscent of bettas can must have a heater. With all this kit, a 1gal tank doesn't provide the fish numerous living house to flow.

Wont Melafix help? I know that cures almost everything and can be found at Petsmart.

Add aquarium salt to your tank - and start treatment with antibiotics. You can buy both at Petsmart.

I have Betta's on my desk at work too - I know how you feel :(

it is build up of water under the skin. try adding aquarium salt to the water. about a teaspoon per gallon.

however, true dropsy is kidney failure, and is not curable.
