lets see...
some of my favorite series are:
His Dark Materials (Golden Compass series)
Abhorsen
The Giver, Gathering Blue, The Messenger
and if you have A LOT of time to read:
The Wheel of Time (think 12 Harry Potter-length books, one of which is not written yet)
These are all fantasy to some degree

Have you seen Stephen R Donaldson's"Chronicles of Thomas Covenant"? The third chronicles are currently being written.Look here for a brief overview, http://theland.antgear.com/overview.html.
Another series he has written is Mordants Need in two volumes, "Mirror of her dreams" and " A man rides through". These are perhaps a gentler introduction to hbis work as the chronicles can be a bit hard going at first.

I have a great one for you. Glen Cook's Garrett books. They are not only everything you asked for but they are hilariously funny. The older ones are out of print and a bit hard to find but they come up on e bay sometimes and half.com. You can tell its a Garrett book if it has the name of a metal like gold, silver, lead etc. in it. In short, Mr.Cook combines detective noir fiction with fantasy and sci fi and what he comes up with is incredible. I highly recomomend it and I wish he would re release some of the old ones because his legion of fans is huge. C.

Well of course you cant go wrong with tolkien, there is the Dragonlance chronicles. Ive heard the dragon riders of pern series is good although ive never read it myself. The Wizard of Earthsea I thought was really good. Tolkien sort of has his own mythology in those books if your looking for a backstory kind of thing. Hope that helped.
***stephen king one of my fav authors and I dont mention the dark tower series...geesh I am getting old!!!****

I'm an English Teacher and I highly suggest: The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. It is part I of a trilogy. I also recommend anything by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. if you like alternate universes and humor. My favorite of his is: Cat's Cradle.
