a lot of britons say we dont, with most coupels just cohabiting or not even that. The trend is spreading. What is your thought on it ? Do we still need marriage, in a time where women can earn their own money ? In what way is it still important ? Why can it be done away with ?

Marriage is less important to women as a whole because they are more financially independent than several hundred years ago.

From an American perspective, being able to own property and earning the right to vote, taking part in the industrialization age while men were at war, and being able to control their own bodies in terms of fertility have given women the opportunity to say, "No, thanks, I'll just get a job," instead of marrying someone when Dad's sick of supporting you.

Marriage as a social institution will always be important so long as women and men have a "true love" idea... but even that is often about money - the $30,000 wedding or $10,000 ring.
