Is it possible to connect a audio tape player to a pc for the purpose of downloading music tapes to my hard drive. The tape player has a 5 pin DIN socket. If it is possible can anyone tell me where I can purchase a connection lead?

Nikolay's answer should work but alternatively if your tape deck has an earphone socket you can run from that to the line in socket at the back of the computer. Start off with the volume quite low and adjust till you get a reasonable level. I don't know what you are going to use for the recording but a good free programme us Audiograbber. Download free from www.audiograbber.com-us. When running go to file/line in sampling and record. You can get an MP3 converter if you want the tracks in MP3 Format. I have done all my LP's using this method. Hope this heps. Or helps even.

Hey, dude, you need one of these:
5-Pin A DIN Plug to Stereo 1/4” or 3.5mm Socket Adaptor and an audio cable extension that you can plug into your "Line In" or "Microphone" plugs on your PC.

I know Radio Shack has them and e-bay has tons.
Here's one that you can use directly, but this is bulk orders only:

The hardware has many combinations, but also make sure you have a good recording software, experiment with a few and see which works the best.

Edit: Agree with the post below (James), MOST tape decks have a headphone jack (Either 3.5mm or 1/4in). If you do don't bother with the 5-pin DIN, just get a 1/4 to 3.5 adapter for 10c at any store that sells audio.

It sure is possible. Here are pinouts for the connector you have:

You should be able to build a cable that converts DIN to mini 1/8" jack using this information. From there, you should be able to plug the 1/8" jack into your soundcard's LINE input and record using Windows sound recorder or whatever the equivalent is on your mac/linux machine.

If you would rather not bother building a cable, there are tape deck drives for the PC that will even do the mp3 conversion for you. see here:

yes all you need is a tape player with a headphone socket and then connect a line in to both the line in socket on your soundcard and the headphones socket on your tape player...then using good software such as cool edit pro you can record the sound from your line in to a wav or mp3 file. you will get some hissing from the tape on the digitally recorded track but in cool edit pro there is a hiss reduction tool to help clean it up.

A lot depends on the quality of your sound card. My own attempts at this, had quite bad hiss that I took a lot of trouble to remove with software after recording them to the hard drive. I used Goldwave to do that.

I'm pretty sure that you should be able to get a suitable cable at your local electrical shop.
