Do either of the political ideologies (lib/con) benefit from the division in this country?

I wish I had as much faith as you Millie. I really do. But when I see the very independence of this country being threatened by globalization and don't see the people protecting their representative government, because they are so divided on every issue. I don't see a very bright future. When we can't even agree on our own national sovereignty and independence. What can we agree on?

Jbare, When the majority of Americans don't even bother to vote, who is it that really isn't playing their role in this representative government? Really! I'm asking, because I don't see anyone playing their role anymore.

Both do.

As long as the divide exists, fanatics on both ends of the spectrum can score points by attacking the other side -- just for being on the other side.

If the division goes away, everyone has to actually debate the issues on their merits, rather than attacking groups based on their broad philosophical stance.

Nope, we all lose.

Congress and Presidents have a hard time getting anything done with all the bipartisanship going on.

I don't like "towing the party line" no matter who we're talking about.

They should either listen to their constituency or vote with their best judgement.

Good question. Benefit? Well, it helps me define what I want and don't want. Without one side or the other, we are all the same, aren't we? There have always been divisions and we have survived it and will continue to do so.
