Are Mercs still considered a "classy" car, or because of thweir recent popularity with the "lower social orders" and apparently crappy workmanship, are they now crass, like burberry is now?

Your thoughts?

I find that there are cars and then there is Mercedes. I drive a Mercedes E320T and am very happy with it. The ride is great, and all the little features make would make it difficult to choose anything else. I have been looking at Volvo, VW, Audi, but always end up back to Mercedes.
When I had my Porsche my wife would start complaining that "your driving to fast" at about 160-180km ph. I have been hitting 220-260 in the Benz without the wife even looking up from her magazine. You can not beat the ride, especially at the higher speeds. What is difficult is when you slow down from 260 to take an off ramp at 60. And again thanks to Mercedes engineering I have taken a few of the 60km corners at 160 and made it.
I have a junk yard full of cars, but I only have 7 Mercedes and all are from the mid to late 1980's. One 1990 E190. But the 190's were not the best made Mercedes.
But for performance, comfort, and reliability I do not think that you can find a better made car.

Mercedes is good, sadly enough they are overpriced. There are far better makes on the market such as BMW, Audi And Volkswagen. Mercedes among them isn't the best. It's only their name which makes it so expensive and the classy look and feel gives it an extra touch for looking expensive. Though don't believe what one said about the honda accord because German cars are great make and always will be. Japanese cars on the other hand are a couple of steps behind regarding reliability and comfort and power

Classy cars are frequently run in their old age by people without any. Merc have now made big changes in quality control. Word is this year we should be seeing benefits. I have driven them and their competitors and they still seem the best, especially on long journeys. There is nothing to touch the S Class.

I think it depends on who is driving them and their age. Chavs do drive older model Mercs it's true but they also can be seen in BMWs, even Rollers.

They are still a classy car, look how many classy people drive them and the cost to buy them new. Plus they last forever - my dad had one from new and put 350,000 on it in 11 years - it was still running well and he sold it to some chav dude for £1000.

The older models(190e, s-class etc) were known to be excellent. The new models are lacking in quality I feel.
