Basically they separate the bag of waters from the top of your cervix...Your cervix has to be dilated some already for this to happen, they have to at least be able to get a finger or two to the upper portion of your cervix. This in turn is supposed to release the hormone prostagladin and stimulate contractions. Some swear by it it has never worked for me personally...I have carried them all overdue even after stripping. The procedure is uncomfortable but not painful as long as you take a deep breath and relax your pelvic floor muscles.

this is not an answer, just kind of like a question to a question but isn't it kinda weird how doctors make the scariest names for not so scary procedures like this one, i mean, stripping membranes sounds terrible, why couldn't it be like amniotic lift or something less intimidating? and it seems like they do that alot, you know? like when the cervix is thinning they call it effacement, sounds like something is being defaced!

It is where they sweep your cervix to seperate it from your bags of water. They will put you into the same postion they do when they check your cervix. It hurts very little but can be very effective in starting labor.

The doctor will use their gloved finger to separate the placenta from the uterine wall at the cervix. It's mildly uncomfortable and slightly painful . . . nothing unbearable though. (I had it done twice with my last pregnancy.)
