Mary J. Blige, aka the Queen of Hip-hop soul, is better than Amerie. Mary has been down and out, but she is still here and continues to remain strong not only in her lyrics but her vocal range as well. She's been in an abusive relationship, battled the demons of the "celebrity life" and continues to hold her ground unlike those who have come before her, Whitney Houston. Mary knows how to hold it down during her concerts, what you hear on the CDs aren't what you get at the show because she flips the script. Although Mary is a veteran to this game, she adapts to the changes in the music scene but never loses herself. There are some veterans who try to adapt to the change in the music world but just end up sounding unbalanced by virture of producing songs that does not match stature. Those are the artists who fall of the radar and are forced to make comebacks time and time again. When Mary was going through her issues she still managed to produce quality records. However, the same can not be said for Amerie. She has a completely different style from Mary. Amerie's material sounds to commercialized. There is sort of glossed over R&B style with Amerie because in terms of her vocal range and song writing capabilities there is a sense that there could be something more but for some reason or another there just isn't. Amerie's style does not seem very unique but presents itself more as a mirror image of all the bubblegum R&B out in the world today.

I live near Maryland, where Amerie is from, and she's awesome....don't get me wrong. But Mary J. Blige has arrived to being one of the best R&B singers of our time...with a career stemming over 15 years. She's awesome. Her songs move you....inspire thought, and inspiration. She's a queen. Amerie has some more to do in her career to reach Mary's status.
