UPN quietly went off the air on September 15, 2006.

WWE Friday Night SmackDown! was the last official program (although some affiliates aired the optional weekend encore block), ending its existence after 11 years.

However, UPN affiliates owned by Fox Television Stations Group ended all ties to the network on August 31, 2006. As a result UPN did not air its last two weeks of programming in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and six other media markets in which Fox owned the UPN station, also due in part to then upstart Fox owned MyNetworkTV, which was set to debut during that time on those stations.

With the exception of WWE Friday Night SmackDown!, all programming during the final three months were reruns. Friday Night SmackDown!, however, was aired in those markets on WB stations owned by Tribune, which have since become CW stations.

After the network's official closure, UPN's website was redirected to The CW's website.

Update: Just for those of who asked ... the CW is an acronym for the parent companies of the network: The "C" is for CBS and the "W" stands for Warner Brothers.

UPN and the WB merged and now are called the CW b/c CBS owns the channel with Warner bros. this happened last September 06 its hard to find stories about this. All of the stories I have found just reference the merge. Many channels that were called UPN are now MY Network channels.

The UPN channel is now the CW. The same channel just some of the shows are different.

Last fall, TheWB and UPN merged to form the new channel TheCW. This channel has the best shows from TheWB (e.g. Smallville, One Tree Hill, Seventh Heaven) and the best shows from UPN (e.g. Veronica Mars, Top Model, WWE, etc).

All the other shows got cancelled because they sucked :)

Both Fox & The WB decided to drop their afterschool hours program in favor of local programming. Since the WB is joining forces with UPN to form The CW Network in September, the new network just announced that they will resume afterschool hours programing starting either in september or in January 2007.
