Robert Smalls, Born a slave in Beaufort in 1839, Robert Smalls lived to serve as a Congressman of the United States.

The first meeting to draft the Ordinance of Secession (by which South Carolina led the withdrawal of the Southern states from the Union) was held at the Milton Maxey House in Beaufort, known today as the Secession House. As a result, Beaufort was an early target of the Federal forces.

The Milton Maxey House (or Secession House as it's called today). That's where the first meeting to draft the Ordinance of Secession was.

There was also a battle in Port Royal Sound.
There was one in Port Royal Ferry too, that's when Beaufort was captured by the Union.
