Guidelines currently state that you get the first baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 to 40. Between 40-50 it should be done every other year. After the age of 50, it should be repeated yearly. Women you are at high risk for developing breast cancer may need to be tested earlier than these recommendations and at more frequent intervals. Of course, a breast self exam should be done every month. This should be done several days after your period ends.

Women should do a monthly self breast exam and have her breasts examined at her annual physical. Women over the age of 40 should have an annual mammogram. Women with a family history of breast cancer should begin mammograms earlier.
