How do beepers/pagers work?

Question

I've always wanted to know how thwy work because in hospitals they always use them instead of phones but dont you have to use a phone to phone the beeper or pager place?

From cell phone Towers which emit satellite signals. The pager gets the signal and beeps or shakes to let U know
someone is trying to get in touch. Normally records their cal-
ling number.
