I was having a great day today, when I was laughing like crazy almost every minute. But I can't help but wonder, what makes us laugh? I'm not asking what kind of things cause us to laugh, I mean like, what makes our bodies react in that way, that makes us produce that joyful sound. What triggers in our brain to make us smile at a good joke?

There is a gland in the center of your brain called your peturity gland. It releases certain chemicals that are released into your blood stream that are then absorbed by your cells and make you feel a certain way, hence your emotions.
Your memories influence your chemical release. Your brain makes connections with every situation. Whenever something happens the brain follows that link and releases the same chemicals as before. Hence happy, sad or angry memories influence every present moment and often make you react before realize what you're doing.

What makes us cry? Its kind of the same thing. Our body reacts in certain ways that fit with specific emotions. When you are happy, you smile or laugh. When you are angry, your face turns red and your blood pressure rises. I am sure that a doctor might know the answer.
