My PC is old now and needs to be replaced. I don't work on it so I think its possibly time to get a laptop. How do I know which is a good one as I don't want to spend a lot of money. Its just for emails, shopping and updating my i-pod.... I'm in UK.

Loads of different ones out there - you can probably find one to suit you for about £500. Chose one with at least 512 MB RAM (preferably 1GB, it'll be faster) and at least 60 GB hard drive (100GB if you want to get one with Windows Vista instead of Windows XP).

I'd suggest going to PC World or equivalent, finding one you like, then going home and looking for it on the internet. I found mine for £140 less that way.

Hi Finch has a good answer but I had same problem last year when I was looking for a laptop for my son. Please don't buy a packard bell or advent which are packard bell. I have had 2 of these machines and both were rubbish to be honest.

We trawled all the shops and the net but in the end we bought and Acer 5612wlmi. It has a dual core processor, 1gb ram, dual layer dvd re-writer, 224mb graphics, 80 gig hard drive, wireless. Its a fantastic machine and we bought it from comet and was £560. My son uses it for web design and is chuffed to bits with it 7 months on.

In January our main pc, packard bell was playing up, only 3 years old, reloaded windows, didn't help, possible power failure and motherboard fault and wanted a cheap laptop. We bought an Acer 3692 wlmi for £400 from comet. It has the same spec as my son's but with single core processor. It is far better than any packard bell rubbish and doesn't come with the rubbish software that you don't need.

I would have a look at both the comet and ebuyer site and wouldn't be put off by getting a machine that still has xp on it.

We are extremely happy with our Acer laptops and would buy another one. If I couldn't get the Acer I wanted I would look at hp.

Buy a copy of MicroMart computer magazine, it's only a couple of quid and has loads of adverts for new and factory reconditioned laptops. Many are reconditioned at factory and carry a full twelve month warranty. Well worth a look for what you are using it for. Hope this helps

I'd go with finch on this, browse in PC World, then go and find it cheaper elsewhere. I wouldn't bother with Vista, XP will do fine
