Is it just me, or is it dumb for people to put on here "I have a degree in X, what job can I get?" Hello! You went into the stupid degree, didn't you bother to find out how to apply it???? I am not saying that you can't do a degree for the sake of learning, but come on, who really has the luxury to afford the time and cost of this but a relative few?

I got my degree in Accounting. I know what I want to be. It just ANNOYS the stuffing out of me when I see dumb questions on here that say my major is X, what job can I get? Just a rant.

It's like they get the first bill for their student loan and realize "oh crap" I have to pay this sucker back. Why didn't I get a more marketable degree? Now I am stuck in retail or customer service and don't have a career!

A very good point
If you are going to study Botany or Art History or Strange Languages
, make sure you are doing it mostly because you enjoy it.
If you are wealthy and won't have to work don't worry about it.
If you will have to pay off your student loans, when you go for that supermarket job or driving a cab cuz your need money, the degree will stand in your way.
Study Nursing or Chemistry maybe, something that people actually get hired doing if you think you will need money.

Business degrees will cover you for most jobs in business. I have an accounting degree, but have been doing things other than accounting for some years, now. I agree, a degree in Creative Writing or Landscaping when you want to be in business is pretty silly. You should get a degree that you can use in whatever career field you're interested in.
But, unless you're planning on waiting tables or are going into the trades, you'd better find a way to get one or you'll spend your life saying "Do you want fries with that?" India alone is putting out something like 500,000 degrees a year. That's a lot of people looking to take away your job if you don't make yourself more marketable.

Yes its just you....about 75% of college graduates end up working in jobs unrelated to their majors. Just ask the people around you and you will see how true this is. Since you study so much in college, you gain a wide variety of skills and many jobs are not really limited to a specific major. Peace Corps, Ford, Gap hire all academic majors, so when people on here ask what what kind of jobs they can get with their degree, they are looking to connect with other people who know of specific positions, companies or have other adviceto offer which may be of interest to them. The best way to get ahead is through networking.

Well these days you need a college degree to have any good jobs available to you. Many students do not know what they want to do when they graduate, but they want to go to college. I think going to college is very important because it teaches you skills you will use in any job, such as writing and critical evaluation of resources. I am in college still, but my dad says that he can tell when one of his coworkers has not gone to college because they lack some of the writing and communication skills you can only learn in college.
Also, it is true that it is very hard to go back to college after you have a job and are working in the real world. Getting any college degree will make more job opportunities available to you, so if you are lucky enough top be able to go to college, it is a good idea to take advantage of it.

I concur. I believe that the point of college should be preparing you to enter a career. If your degree isnt leading you to a career (even if that career is to get a Masters and Doctorate in your degree area, and then become a Professor of that Degree at a University), then you shouldnt be there, its a huge waste of time and money.

Hope this is targetted for indian youth.
Not all people are prodigies or else loaded with more wisdom to decide and choose a course of life in order to help them.
An example:
Why do we have policemen trying to regulate people at "No ENTRY" areas or at signal junctions. Everyone knows that traffic rules are a must. Then do away with them. Law abiding !!!!!
They are there just to catch the CHRONIC offenders and people who are tempted to mistake because of their situations.(normal human beings unknowing the routes)
Police men not only fine them but sometimes help too.
Pl. apply the same case here. Guys and girls coming from families , villages and socially poor environment are proud of completing a college study. Only uou and me are sitting in YAHOO answers and exchanging naughty answers in between. But, in India it is only a minniscule percentage of population. So pl. dont apply your " CULTURED EGOISTIC" syndrome to all. We are only exceptions of the whole lot (Thanks to my parents for this). But, have a wholesome look. You will understand . Feel pitiable that they did not chose or did not get the right decision to suit the path based on their interest or skill.
Knowledgeable people like you should help them and proactively route the young lot to choose the right education for deciding their job.
Afterall, we are an agricultural nation speeding up first in INFORMATION Highway in one direction.
The other direction wants to speed up but no routes for them. Thats why the trouble. Have this in your mind and try helping them out rather than cursing them as stupid degrees and with other jargon showers.

I agree, people should know what they want to do before they begin a degree lol. It's a complete waste of time and money otherwise. I was a bit unsure of what I wanted to do at Secondary school but I figured out what I wanted to do before I started college and now i'm yet another step closer to getting there. :)

Part of earning a degree is taking courses outside your major and exploring your options.
And yes, I think it is just you. When people ask the question they may be seeking information about possibilities that they never considered.
