I cannot say there wasn't some manipulation like this - some of the hard-core leftist groups associated with the anti-war stuff are well-schooled on propaganda and media manipulation and how to stage a protest for best media effect.

The war has nothing to do with St. Patric's Day - but you make an excellent point with your "number manipulation" theory. I'm sure they'll be a small number of liberals who will view the crowd as good fodder to express their anti-Bush rhetoric and a cut and run agenda. Sad indeed.

St Patrick was Italian, but was credited with bringing Catholicism to Irealnd, and taught the holy trinity using the shamrock (three leaves). Just a side note. And as far as couting, maybe...but seriously, who needs to inflate those numbers? I already know how many people are against the war. Here in Ann Arbor, we really do a good protest..usually involves some old white panthers, memebers of MC5, Jon Sinclair might even make an appearance! Good times had by all...;)

If the numbers don't meet media acceptance yes. The big question will the usual cast of characters come out in bad weather for the photo op (Sheehan, Robbins, Fonda etc.)
