It used to be a charitable thing and the fans would come along to Stamford Bridge free because no-one would pay and the throw their salary on the the pitch. Over time this changed and the players began to attract fans that would pay to see them and once a year they would throw their salary on to the pitch instead. The problem is that that the salaries became so big that the pitch took too long to clear that the staff started to refuse to collect the money up for charitable purposes and that chap Ken that has now gone to Leeds was so mean that he told the players to throw celery onto the field instead. Even the now poor fans can offord celery so thyere you go.............. thats the answer.

Because there are no rules against taking celery into a football ground. Oops just read the news, apparently there ARE rules against taking the "popular salad vegetable" to a match. What next?

I don't know why they do it, but I don't think it's necessary. People could take it the wrong way, especially after the banana incident with (who was it again) and so many other players of different races.

There was a group of supporters that threw fish on the pitch. I remember it from about 20 years ago at the Cottage, there was fish everywhere...........
