Hmmmm...technically, I think no...but they sure are, aren't they?

They say they don't, but it is.

The reason why I say that is being former military myself, if they were JUST an explorations group, then their ships are HEAVILY equipped with a LOT of firepower.

Phaser rings, Photon torpedos, Phaser cannons, etc.

Also, they have court martials, the brig, and a military command structure. They also go around and police the galaxy WAY too much to be JUST a bunch of scientists.

Edit: And to the idiot who posted what does being a former military matter? Well, like I posted above, if you had actually bothered to read (this is where attention to details come into play) I mentioned court martials and the brig.

Where do science and exploration groups ANYWHERE have court martials and the brig?

Get lost punk! Ya bother me.

Did they ever claim NOT to be a military entity?

Among other things, they are a paramilitary defense. Paramilitary meaning they're comprised of civilians trained & organized in a military fasion.

To the 1 that uses the logic of having heavily armed ships. They are not on the offensive, but have a right to defend themselves. The only reason we don't have weapons on our space shuttle is because we're pretty sure there's noone out there right now that will harm it. Trust me, if we knew there was, it'd have defensive weapons too.
Oh yeah, I am former military too...like that freakin matters in a question about Star Trek.

I think it must. They have military rank. They help police the neutral zone. They have a fleet of ships. They have the equivalent of an Officer's Candidate School.

My question is to whom is Starfleet answerable? A military body answerable to its own self is a frightening thing.

No, military power is Starfleets last choice. They would rather discover new life, and new races. Remember the Prime Directive.
Right now, it is only the Borg that we are at war with.

They are well equipped, but it seems to be excusively as a defensive measure.
What is weird is that they are like a hybrid of military officers and scientific researchers.

Good question. I think of them as the UN of space. They are more of a peacekeeping force. You don't see them launching a lot of offenses, do you?
