Here are some simple facts, but not complete rules:
- The field has 2 sets of wickets. The batter stands at one set of wickets and the bowler stands at the other set of wickets. The fielders are all around the field waiting to try to catch batted balls.
- The team in the field stays in the field until all of the batters on the other team have batted (there are usually 11 players on each team).
- When both teams have batted, that is considered one "innings". There are 2 innings in a standard game.
- The bowler throws the ball and tries to take wickets. The bowler takes a wicket by hitting the stumps with the ball and knocking the "bail" off of the top of the stumps (the bail is a small piece of wood on the top of the stumps). If the bowler takes a wicket, the batter is out.
- The batter is trying to protect the wickets from the ball. In the process, he tries to hit the ball past the fielders.
- There are several ways for a batter to make an out, but the most common are to be stumped (the pitcher hits a wicket with the ball), to be caught (a fielder catches a batted ball before it hits the ground), or to be run out (where a fielder hits a wicket with the ball while the batter is out of the safe zone).
- If the batter hits the ball, he doesn't have to run. If he choses to run, he must run to the second set of wickets before a fielder can touch the wicket with the ball.
- Each time the batter runs from one wicket to the other, a run is scored for the batting team.
- After 2 innings, the scores are tallied and the team with the most runs wins.

There are a lot of variations on the rules, so I would recommend that you look at a website for more details:

Enjoy!
