I'm 19 years old and I mostly listen to classical music and jazz, do not understand the obsession with celebrities...
There seems to be a dwlindling number of people willing to exert their brain power on meaningful art. Or anything that requires a lot of concentration. The few that do are really snobby (me as well, I guess). Why are most people attracted to terrible mass music and crude movies?
And is there a dumbing down of culture - will it keep getting worse?

i think americans are conditioned to care about those things so that we are less involved with whats going on in the world. that makes us better consumers because after all in capitalist society you really are just a wallet who buys things.
on the flip side though, i would caution you on assuming that what you listen to is so much more intelligent than others. that is just your opinion. studies have even disproved the idea that playing classical music for your baby makes them smarter. it doesnt. classical or jazz may seem to you to be higher brow, but thats all in the eye of the beholder. i think if you want to understand why people are compelled to care about celebrities or liusten to bad music, you should put yourself in their shoes. experience what they consider to be art before you pass judgement on it. then you will not only be able to relate but also my see that even things that seem low brow might still have something to offer.

Yes, there is a dumbing of culture all over the world, and the blame can't be placed on one thing. Television plays a major role, however, as well as magazines and music. Kids see people through these mediums and want to be like them, and it's not so much as wanting to be like them as the time that they waste watching people fart on television or reading the latest gossip on Brittney Spears or what have you. Society as a whole is definitely dumbing down, and I'm afraid that one day we're going to be hard-pressed to find a decent art museum or live theatre in town. The world is turning cyber-happy.

You're a lucky member of the intelligentsia.
Listening to classical music is like reading literature rather than a comic book.
How lucky you are to be able to commune with some of the best minds in the history of the world. These thinkers express themselves in music, literature, clothes design, mathematics and many other media that are closed to the ignorant. People who only follow trendy, popular culture are prisoners of their own minds, victimized by their intellectual limitations, maimed by intellectual sloth and laziness when they were children and teenagers.
Weep not for them, but for their children who probably will follow in their footsteps.

Don't be so uptight..Low-brow culture how can that be when your keeping yourself stagnant on classical music and jazz. Open up to the times and see there is more to life. Meaningful art...it depends on how you view art. You sound really close minded not snobby.
