Is there anything that can be done to eliminate the noise or do I have to buy a new one?

It depends on what kind of fan you have. If you are talking about a furnace blower motor some have oil ports. If it does have ports then you have 1 that you can see for the backside bearing and 1 that can only be reached if you pull the wheel off of the motor. Typically they use a 40 weight oil. Most newer motors have sealed bearings and you cant do anything about it as they do not have oil ports. DO NOT use wd40. There is no part of the bearings that you can see and spraying wd40 on the motor could short the windings. If you are talking about a ceiling fan or just a box fan there isn't probably any oil ports but they are different depending on the manufacturer. The oil ports on motors usually have a yellow, silver or red cap that you pull off. If you do add oil make sure you know exactly how much to add. Most motors take 4 drops of 40 weight on each bearing. Hope this helps.

A lot of different fans out there. Some smaller fans have a brass sleeve bearing and they get worn and not much you can really do to get a long lasting fix. Bigger fans may have provisions for oiling and that would help. Make sure the fan blade is not contacting the shroud.

After taking one of the earlier responses and oiling the motor check the fan blade mounting screws and check the fan to see if the main holding bracket is tight and secure.

You don't say what kind of fan but for most all you have to do is get to the motor, clean the dirt/dust out of it and put a couple of drops of light oil on the motor shaft.

oil the fan if you can. Remember that gravity has taken a toll on it thru the years so turn it upside down and see how it runs. Good luck
