People who have answered earlier are correct on how nosebleeds are caused, but do not follow Shaba's advice on stopping them. The method she advises is dangerous because it may cause you to aspirate (basically blood can go into your lungs). What i would recommend to stop a nose bleed would be to press down with two fingers on the back of your neck (just below the ridge of your skull in the middle of your neck, you should feel a little groove) as hard as you can until the nosebleed stops.

Also, if you are using any kind of nasal spray, point it towards the outer side of your nose, not the middle core where all your blood vessels are. Additionally, your nosebleeds may be caused by dryness. If that is the case, a saline spray will help to moisturize your nose and to stop nosebleeds from occurring.

Well usually a vein breaks in your nose could be from picking your nose or if you've had a sports injury or if you've been blowing your nose too hard. Then there are the environmental factors like living or working in areas where the air is dry.
There are some serious conditions like leukemia and liver disease and some drug treatments that will cause nosebleeds too. Depending on how often they happen you might want to check a doctor to be sure it's nothing serious.

If you have a bleeding disorder, or dry heat in your home. Bleeding of the nose is called Epitaxis. Hopefully you dont do drugs. Try normal saline to keep your nose moistured.
Change in weather. Try to monitor how often your nose is bleeding. Sometime if you have dry blood in your nose you can have spontaneous bleeding. Humidfier is good and a hepa filter to get all the dust particles in the air.

If your having frequent nose bleeds, it is often caused by excessive dryness. Do you live in an arid climate? They make over the counter nasal moisturizing sprays. You can also put some KY in your nose. That seems to work too.

1. you got punched on it

2. you keep picking your nose

3. internal hemorrhage (are you feeling dizzy? if no, forget this one)

4. high pressure in your head (eg staying upside down like bats and vampires etc for a long time)

5. staying underwater for a long time

does are the ones that came in my head... try google it for better results!

ps to stop bleeding, tilt your head downwards and press the soft part (non cartilagenous part) of your nose. it is good to put a cold cloth on your face to decrease blood flow.
