My pleco is about 10 inches long in a 20 gallon tank, which includes some guppies as well, and it is now floating in the tank in a vertical position. It is still alive and the guppies show no signs of poisoning from either nitirite, nitrate, ammonia, or any other toxin. I did a 75% water change yesterday and added chemicals last night to eliminate any nitrite/nitrate/ammonia in the water. What is wrong with the pleco?

it was not a 75% change. Typo- it was a 25% change and that the ammonia levels and all that were just starting to get bad when i changed. the levels are fine now so that is why i ask this question. He can swim fine, but he also swims pretty wierd at times. He will go up to the surface spinning, swimming upside down, often times going sort of besserk, and this all happens really fast, and then try to hide in some plants but will then just go back to floating, but for the most part he just sits in the vertical position. I have had him for over a year and the type of food he gets is the scraps from the guppie which is regular fish flakes and a couple of alge waffers everynight. The temperature is just the same as it always has been and the Ph level is good. it maybe a little big but i will be moving him into a tank 5 times as big in a few days but i dont know if i should now since he is acting all wierd.

No sign of disease or injury and he has an a lump belly which means he is full of food.

I think that i may have figured out the problem; i recently changed the over-head light from a regular fish tank bulb to a flourescent light. the moment i changed the lights back, he stopped acting funny and went right back to normal. So no one really answered the riddle....

I would need a bit more info to help.

Foods that you feed him? Will it accept food now?
Are there any other signs of injury or disease anywhere on the fish?
Do you know what your ammonia etc was before the massive water change?
Can the fish swim when it tries? If so is it normal swimming or not? If not please describe.

I'll watch the quesiton and look for your info in additional comments.

First of all you never want to change that much water in a tank. 25% is the water change you should be doing once a week. The shock of the new water if it was a slightly different temperature and any cholrine that could have been in the water could have effected the pleco.

Your pleco is also too large for the tank and needs an upgrade soon.

For starters you've got the poor thing crammed into that tiny little tank like some sort of cruel experiment. Unless you don't feed him that really must be one dirty tank.

It's too big for that aquarium might be the problem.

he outgrew his tank, and sadly will not live much longer in a 20 gallon.
