It's the smallest possibly part of an element. If it is broken anymore then it is no longer that element. Atoms are made of protons and nuetrons in the centre and electrons that fly randomly, not always in circles as in cartoons, around it.

Why don't you just research "atom" on google or wikipedia? You'll get better answers.
My answer, which isn't as good:
Atoms are the building blocks of matter .You see them represented as little tiny gray balls, but they are not really like that. You can find their unique shapes on google images by computer representation. They also move really really quickly, and so its hard to actually take a photo of one of them.

The smallest part that any element can be divided into and still have it be that element -- hydrogen, oxygen etc.
