Go to this site:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=410435&lang=en&
(It doesn't have just the 5100, the closest one it has is the 5145)
and choose your Operating System, then you'll want the Driver either the standard or full feature, whichever you prefer. Scroll to step 3, click on the link or the button to download and save the file to your computer. Run the .exe file and follow the steps.

What you're missing is the drivers that need to be installed (from the CD) to your computer. Drivers tell the computer itself how to use the hardware hooked up to it.
You can find drivers at:
http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-002&h_query=Deskjet+5100&submit.x=8&submit.y=9

Click the exact model number, and select your Operating System, on the next screen, under "Drivers" select "HP Deskjet Full Feature software/driver: USB cable". Download the file, and run it. And you should be up-and-running. If you need more help feel free to add details. :)

Heres a link to HP,you download the driver, save it somewhere, then, please to a CD.....

Looked around for your printer, 5100, but site had 5100 series...confused a silver surfer. However, they also have "auto Product Detection"
When you have the driver, install it (run the file) click on it.
