My son would break out in a rash around his mouth, and he'd get an upset stomach. You are wise to introduce new foods one at a time, so that it'll be easy to determine what caused a reaction.
Best wishes!

Don't switch back and forth with the rice. Stay with the food for 4-5 days and watch for any breathing problems, rash or change in stool. If none of those things show up it's safe food. On "known problem" foods like oranges and nuts, give 1 time only in small amounts to be sure they don't get a serious reaction.

Baby may *not* be solids ready just because doctor said so. Cereals aren't really ideal first foods in any case, and as others have said, switching back and forth between them is not a wise idea.
I'd strongly recommend that you research to ensure that your child really should be eating anything other than breastmilk or formula at this age. The American Academy of Pediatrics opposes the introduction of solid food before six months at the very earliest and there is a great deal of medical evidence to support waiting even longer, even with the presence of solids-readiness.
Even if you continue feeding solids, whole foods are better choices than cereals. Sweet potato, banana and avocado are all excellent starters.

Well first off you are only suppose to introduce a new food every 3 days or so. That way, if they get a rash/hives ect, you know what food did it. Also, look out for high reaction foods. Peanuts, eggs, and some others. Talk to your doctor about when you should start these foods.

My doctor NEVER recommended oatmeal at that age. Your best bet is to give him a small amount one day and wait 2-3 days before giving him anymore. Usually, there will be a rash, swelling, fever, etc. as signs. This way, you can watch for any allergic reactions. I used to mix cereal with a little gerber applesauce and she loved that!

Straight rice and oatmeal or baby cereal? If he has an allergic reaction, call your pediatrician right away so he/she can have your baby eat something else.

An allergy can also result in breathing problems, so watch out for that too.
